UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) signed today an agreement worth US$4 million, in support of the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
The agreement was signed by H.E. Mr. Mohammed Hassen J. Al-Jabir, Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Lebanon on behalf of Qatar Fund for Development and Ms. Mireille Girard, UNHCR Representative to Lebanon, in support of UNHCR’s healthcare activities of Syrian refugees in Lebanon for six months.
This contribution aims to support UNHCR’s efforts in providing shelter assistance for an estimated 8,000 vulnerable Syrian refugee households living in the Bekaa, as well as secondary health care services for an estimated 3,000 Syrian refugees. These services include rehabilitation of sub-standard shelters and distribution of shelter kits, as well as subsidization of hospital admissions for emergency, life-saving and obstetric care.
“We are pleased and honored to sign the agreement between on behalf Qatar Fund for Development Fund and UNHCR in Lebanon, which is funding a project that provides shelter for Syrian refugees and health care for pregnant women in Lebanon for a total of US$4 million. This contribution is a continuation of Qatar’s commitment to alleviate the humanitarian crisis of Syrian refugees and their basic needs in the harsh living circumstances in Lebanon and countries of refuge.” said H.E. Mr. Al Jabir.
“The Qatar Fund for Development’s latest contribution to UNHCR is yet another testament to the State of Qatar’s commitment to support refugees. With the support of generous donors like Qatar, UNHCR will be able to provide shelter assistance and life-saving care for vulnerable Syrian refugees to help preserve their dignity in their country of refuge.” said Ms. Girard commenting on the importance of this agreement. “I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude for this continuous support and look forward to a long and fruitful collaboration.” Ms. Girard added.
During the past years, QFFD has supported UNHCR’s programmes in support of refugees and internally displaced persons. QFFD’s contributions to UNHCR’s programmes have reached a total of nearly US$18 million supporting some 560,000 refugees and internally displaced persons in Iraq, Bangladesh and Yemen.
