UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in collaboration with Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, airlifted on Monday the first of several shipments to Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut, Lebanon, amid an increasingly dire humanitarian situation in the country. These shipments will carry over 127 tonnes of UNHCR emergency aid for Lebanese and refugees. The airlifts are facilitated as part of the air bridge operated by the State of Qatar.
The Qatari Amiri Air Force aircrafts will transport a total of 136,500 sleeping mats and 750 plastic tarpaulins which are expected to provide immediate support to vulnerable Lebanese families and refugees from various nationalities directly affected by the conflict.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, expressed his appreciation for Qatar’s support, saying, “These airlifts are not merely about delivering urgent relief items; they are a demonstration of solidarity with those facing dire circumstances in Lebanon as a result of the ongoing hostilities. The timely delivery of life-saving assistance, thanks to the State of Qatar’s support to UNHCR and the people of Lebanon, will contribute to alleviating the suffering of those displaced by conflict.”
Her Excellency Minister of State for International Cooperation, Lolwah bint Rashid Al-Khater, stated, “Following the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to establish an air bridge, this airlift underscores Qatar’s commitment to humanitarian action. By working closely with UNHCR, we aim to provide timely relief to those affected by the crisis in Lebanon. Our collective efforts are essential to support the needs of the displaced and ensure they receive the assistance required to rebuild their lives.”
The Government of Lebanon estimates that more than 1.2 million people have been displaced due to the escalating conflict and intensified Israeli airstrikes, mainly from South Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, and Beirut’s densely populated Southern Suburbs.
The humanitarian needs are fast-growing – and there is a need for urgent funding to respond adequately, as current resources are far from sufficient to help everyone in need. The most urgent immediate needs are access to safe shelters, relief items, healthcare, cash assistance, protection services and psychosocial support.
UNHCR has launched an emergency appeal for Lebanon, aiming to mobilize US$ 111 million to meet the urgent and growing needs over three months.
The logistical support provided by the Government of Qatar to facilitate these airlifts will support UNHCR’s emergency response, addressing the needs of all affected communities, including both Lebanese and refugees. This in-kind contribution reflects the State of Qatar’s steadfast partnership with UNHCR, contributing to its operations around the world to assist refugees and the forcibly displaced globally.
