World Refugee Day 2002: Thailand

A painting competition was held with the participation of children from 30 schools in Bangkok.

A panel discussion on refugee women took place. Four prominent panellists shared their experience and knowledge about refugee women prior to an exchange of views with the audience.

UNHCR donated a number of books on migration, refugees, humanitarian and human rights issues to the libraries of the National Human Rights Commission and Thammasart University.

A two-day exhibition of panels and products made by refugees was organised jointly by NGOs and UNHCR.

Refugee children and youth performed music and dances.

A commemoration event was held in Bang Pan Kwai/ Tractor Camp on 20 June. A drama was presented by Kayah women, who portrayed their reason for fleeing Myanmar.

Refugees in Mae Khong Kha Camp also commemorated the occasion by their own initiative with the support of NGOs.

In Tak Province, the celebration took place in Mae La, Umpium, and Nu Po Refugee Camps.

Various activities took place also in Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi Provinces. Two-day World Refugee Day workshops were held to raise awareness in the refugee-hosting communities. The workshops targeted youth, teachers, and local authorities. Other events included competitions in volleyball, chess, Scrabble, and basket-making.
