Providing Durable Solutions to Refugees

Providing Durable Solutions to Refugees

We work to ensure that everybody has the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge, having fled violence, persecution, war, or armed conflict. In 2011, the Republic of the Philippines marked its 30th year as signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol. UNHCR continues to work with the Government of the Philippines and other stakeholders in upholding a favourable protection environment for refugees and asylum seekers, not only within the Philippine context but also in Asia.

UNHCR actively supports the Philippine government in fulfilling its obligations and upholding standards for the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers, including the determination of refugee claims, and addressing related concerns and issues affecting refugees and other people of concern linked to forced displacement, migration, human trafficking and people smuggling.

UNHCR is engaged in partnership with civil society and non-government organizations for the advocacy, assistance and attainment of solutions for refugees and asylum seekers.

We aim to support the Philippines' vision to be a model within the Southeast Asian region in providing meaningful protection and attainable durable solutions to refugees, asylum seekers and stateless persons through the attainment of the following Key Results Areas:

-Improved inter-agency coordination mechanisms

-Enhanced national legislation and administrative regulations monitoring

-Improved administrative practices

-Opportunities for capacity building

-Attainment of durable solutions
