As of the 31st of January, a total number of 52,062 families (approximately 236,525 individuals) are currently displaced in Mindanao. COVID-19 has exacerbated many of the challenges and vulnerabilities brought by recurring conflicts and climate crisis, and forcibly displaced families need our help now more than ever.
With your support, UNHCR continues to work with government, the private sector, and other humanitarian actors to deliver life-saving aid and ensure access to vital services including health, water, sanitation, and hygiene.
With your help and the complementation of resources from UNHCR Philippines, local government unit (LGU) of Palimbang, and ACCORD, 114 forcibly displaced families (approximately 487 individuals) were provided with fleece blankets, plastic sheets, sleeping mats, and solar lamps on 3rd February 2021. This relief distribution was conducted alongside psychosocial activities for the children and health awareness activities on proper handwashing and child maternal care.
The 114 families belong to the indigenous people of Manobo and were forced to flee from their homes in the hinterland of Brgy. Banbanen due to armed conflict. They found shelter in the barangay halls of neighboring barangays, in the homes of their relatives, or in vacant lots using the indigenous materials available. The LGU of Palimbang headed by the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) and Municipal Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) had already provided initial relief assistance, but the families have not yet been able to safely return to their place of origin, and they continue to face health and protection risks.
This concerted effort from the LGU, ACCORD, and UNHCR will really help the IDPs brave through the difficulties while in displacement. Thank you for helping us stay and deliver for the most vulnerable.
Continuous rainfall resulted to flooding and increased sea water levels on the coastal barangays of Jolo, Parang, and Patikul Municipalities in Sulu Province. Families were forced to leave their homes to seek temporary shelter with their relatives, and according to the local authorities, 244 houses in six barangays were damaged.
With your support, UNHCR Philippines in coordination with the local government units (LGU) of affected municipalities, reached 453 families (approximately 2,265 individuals) with life-saving emergency assistance. This is complementary to the ongoing support provided by municipal and barangay LGUs for the displaced families in Sulu.
“Hindi pa nga nakaka-recover mula sa aksidenteng sunog, bahagya na namang nasira ang aming bahay. Malaking bagay sa amin ang tulong mula sa local na pamahalaan ng Jolo, sa opis ng MSSD [Ministry of Social Services and Development]. Sana po ay mahanapan ng paraan paano maayos ang aming bahay. Salamat din sa UNHCR sa naipa-abot na tulong,” says Hatae Juhan, one of those who received life-saving support in Brgy. Bus-Bus, Jolo.
We can only be safe if everyone is safe, included, and protected. For families in Mindanao displaced by recurring conflicts and climate crisis, COVID-19 has only exacerbated existing vulnerabilities.
With your support, UNHCR Philippines will continue to stay and deliver, working with government and humanitarian partners to reach the most vulnerable forcibly displaced families and ensure that protection is at the center of all humanitarian responses.
Together, let us recover from these challenges without leaving the most vulnerable behind.
