MANILA, Philippines — October 24, 2015 marks the 70th founding anniversary of the United Nations (UN) with the global theme “Strong UN. Better World.” For seven decades, the global agency has changed millions of lives in sectors such as Peace and Security, Economic Development, Social Development, Human Rights, Environment, International Law, Humanitarian Affairs, and Health. Through UNHCR, it has assisted refugees and displaced people with humanitarian relief and international protection worldwide.
As part of the “Turn the World UN Blue” campaign, the SM Mall of Asia (SM MOA) Globe was lit up in UN blue to mark the historic event. Other prominent landmarks around the world, including the Sydney Opera House and Empire State Building in New York, were also lit up in blue as part of the global campaign.
In SM MOA, a program for senior officials from the UN and government, diplomats, dignitaries, and members of civil society and media was held to celebrate achievements made by partnerships with UN agencies in the Philippines. The program included musical performances by KC Concepcion and Anne Curtis, both celebrity ambassadors for WFP and UNICEF respectively, and Filipino shadow dance group, El Gamma Penumbra. Highlights were a photo exhibit on the work of various UN agencies in the Philippines and the Sustainable Development Goals. A UNHCR booth promoted the work of the agency and provided members of the public with an opportunity to join its giving program in the Philippines.
