Albania: latest Kosovar arrivals

Briefing notes

Albania: latest Kosovar arrivals

1 June 1999

A total of 286 refugees arrived in northern Albania yesterday amid shellfire. Also yesterday, several Serb rockets aimed at alleged KLA positions in the area hit Krume, 25 km north of Kukes where there are several thousand refugees. There were no casualties. A UNHCR security team went there today to assess the damage.

About 2,000 refugees moved out of the Kukes area, including 254 in NATO trucks. NATO will use three helicopters to transport sick and elderly refugees to Durres today. As fighting in the border area escalates the need to move refugees away from Kukes is becoming more and more urgent by the day.
