World Refugee Day 2002: Iran
A cultural event took place on 20 June at the Conference Centre of the State's Cultural Heritage Organisation.
The programme included an Afghan music concert followed by a theatre play directed and partly played by Afghan refugees. Exemplary Afghan women teachers and mothers from the refugee community received awards. The event was well attended by officials from Ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs, Parliament Deputies from Tehran and Mashad, members of Iran's Commission on National Security and Foreign Policies, "Iran and Afghanistan Friendship Association," NGOs, refugees, and the Iranian public.
A football match between Afghan refugees and famous Iranian players took place on 20 June at Takhti Sports Complex in Tehran, and it was attended by over 20,000 Afghan and Iranian people. The game was broadcast live by Sports Channel (Channel Three) and Jam-e Jam International Service (for Europe and North America) of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting, as well as Channel One of Afghanistan TV.
