Chad: the largest number of refugees transferred in one day

Yesterday, we transferred the largest number of refugees in one day so far in our extensive operation to relocate tens of thousands of refugees from the volatile Chad-Sudan border to safer locations in the interior of Chad before the start of the rainy season in late May. Convoys brought 1,336 refugees yesterday to five camps throughout the vast border region.

Among the five camps is a new camp opened this week at Goz Amer. This is the first camp established in the southern section of the affected border zone, and is the first opportunity for refugees encamped along the 300-km stretch of border between Ade and Tissi to move to a safer location further inside Chad. Goz Amer 1 camp received its first convoy of refugees on Tuesday. So far, 208 refugees have been transported to Goz Amer 1 camp in two convoys from the border town of Mouraye, south of Ade.

Four camps - Farchana, Kounoungo, Touloum and Iridimi - are already operating in the northern part of the region, receiving refugees transferred from around the towns of Tine, Birak and Adré on the Chad-Sudan border. In all, 15,428 refugees have been transferred to the five camps opened to date.
