UNHCR’s observations to the proposed amendments to the Norwegian Immigration Act to allow for detention of asylum-seekers.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has submitted our observations to the proposed amendments of the Norwegian Immigration Act, which will allow for detention of asylum-seekers for 48 hours while their application is being processed.
UNHCR recognizes the challenge of national asylum systems as well as the need to accelerate the processing of claims that are clearly unfounded. However, UNHCR recommends that detention is used as a last resort and recommends that the government considers alternatives to detention.
The observations are available here.
