Danish companies stepping up: Large donation of blankets will provide warmth to families fleeing Ukraine

The humanitarian crisis in Ukraine is rapidly deteriorating. In just seven days, more than one million people have fled the country. Most of them are women and children. Moreover, at least one million people have become displaced in their own country.  

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is working hard to protect and help the many desperate people, who are in urgent need of humanitarian support, including shelter, blankets and other types of life-saving emergency assistance.  

Two Danish companies have now joined forces to help families in desperate need. Retail chain JYSK has donated 26,000 blankets to refugees from Ukraine. The donation is being transported from Denmark to Poland for free by Danish logistics company DSV and will help UNHCR reach even more people in need. 

However, the humanitarian situation on the ground is critical and there is still a great need for support from the Danish private sector.  

“I am currently in Poland, by the Ukrainian border, and have seen how refugees arrive with very few belongings. It is cold here, it is winter, and they need help. The collaboration between UNHCR, JYSK and DSV is a good example of how the UN and Danish companies are joining forces, making a difference for refugees and displaced people,” says the Danish Minister for Development Cooperation, Flemming Møller Mortensen. 

“We are grateful in UNHCR for the quick and generous donation of 26,000 blankets from JYSK to the many refugees from Ukraine who have just crossed the border to Poland, and for DSV’s offer to transport the blankets from Denmark to Poland. It is a clear sign of strong humanitarian commitment from two large Danish companies,” says UNHCR’s Representative to the Nordic and Baltic Countries, Henrik M. Nordentoft.
