A good practice from Sweden.
Disabled Refugees Welcome or DRW, is a three-year integration project, carried out in Sweden by the Independent Living Institute and financed by Allmänna Arvsfonden (the Swedish Inheritance Fund). The initiative is created to develop new methods to improve the conditions of reception and integration of disabled refugees, and is currently running until august 2020.
DRW is creating a diverse network, ranging from NGOs to government organizations, to the Swedish Church and refugee organizations, all coming together to develop the best possible solutions for disabled refugees’ integration, and the network of relevant actors is continuously growing.
Individuals have been supported to access living arrangements, transport and social services, and the project is empowering disabled refugees through group meetings, training and by giving them access to peer support.
In its first year of activity, DRW has managed to reach out and engage with 80 disabled refugees, gather information on the challenges they face living in Sweden, share the demands that have come from the research, provide input for legislation, and support access to living arrangements, transport, social services and trainings.
Disabled Refugees Welcome has officially been recognized as a good practice at the Global Refugee Forum, which has recognized its contribution towards achieving refugees’ self-reliance, one of the main objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees.
