Actor and biomedical engineer
Olivier Mukuta is a Norwegian actor from the Democratic Republic of Congo best known for his role as Abedi in ‘Welcome to Norway’. In August 2016, he won the Amanda Prize, (the Norwegian version of an Oscar), for best actor in a supporting role. In an emotional speech he emphasized how his story is an example that refugees should not be limited in achieving what they want from life.
Mukuta grew up in Malawi, before coming to Norway in 2005 with his family as quota refugees at the age of 18. He lived in a refugee camp in Malawi from when he was 6 until he was 17 years old. In Norway, he completed high school in Kongsberg, before he moved to Oslo to study and pursue his acting career. Today, he is working as a biomedical engineer at Åhus Hospital, while he is also holding lectures for the Norwegian Football Association about Fair Play. He is still acting and the role as Abedi in ‘Welcome to Norway’ has helped Mukuta to make the public aware of his talent.
