War correspondent
Nagieb Khaja is a Danish journalist and war correspondent. He has reported from Afghanistan, Syria and Gaza for international TV-stations, including CNN and Al Jazeera. Khaja has been nominated twice for the prestigious Cavling-prize for his work as a journalist and documentarist.
In the summer of 2007, he travelled to Afghanistan to interview members of Taliban in the Kunar Mountains. Khaja managed to get in touch with Taliban and interview them, but when he returned from the mountains he was arrested by the Afghan security forces, because they do not allow journalists to be in contact with the Taliban movement. He was detained for three days, but was released after pressure from the EU representative in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan has always been close to Khaja’s heart. His father fled to Denmark during the 1970’s, and he has visited refugee camps in Afghanistan and Syria to inform people of the humanitarian consequences caused by war and horror.
