UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has submitted our observations to the Lithuanian government’s proposed amendments to the law on citizenship.
UNHCR notes that the law proposal aims to broaden the group of persons acquiring Lithuanian citizenship by birth. UNHCR also observes that the proposal encompasses several other provisions relevant to stateless persons, notably those addressing the conditions for naturalization and other citizenship related procedures.
However, UNHCR would like to raise several issues that need to be addressed in order to align the Law proposal fully with the provisions of the statelessness conventions of 1954 and 1961.
The observations are available here.
