Again this year, UNHCR is participating in a number of democracy, political and opinion festivals across the region to engage in discussions on refugee issues, both domestically and globally. Check out below in which festivals we are present.
UNHCR will host one event at Arvamusfestival:
Refugees in Estonia before and after the full-scale war in Ukraine. What has changed?
For Estonia, the full-scale war in Ukraine has, among other things, meant welcoming many more refugees than usual. UNHCR invites refugees from Ukraine and elsewhere to discuss how the arrival of many new refugees has impacted their situation.

UNHCR will be part of a joint UN event at Arendalsuka:
If not us, then who? Green, sustainable mingling
The UN Sustainable Development Goals apply to all countries throughout the world, including Norway. What should be done in Norway? And what can Norway do globally?

Similar to Arendalsuka in 2022, displacement caused by the war in Ukraine will be discussed also this year. UNHCR will engage with several stakeholders, seeking a better understanding of how the war and its consequences affect the life of refugees from Ukraine, but also other crises that forces people to flee their homes.
UNHCR will participate at one event at SuomiAreena:
Can a place of work or study save a refugee?
UNHCR will participate in this debate – organised by the Finnish Refugee Council – to discuss if Finland could ethically recruit refugees for sectors with labor shortage or give refugees access to education that would allow them to move safely across state borders using work- and study-based immigration routes?

Lack of labor – can immigrants be the solution?
The lack of labor is at a record high in Sweden, so is it time that employers start looking more towards people with an immigrant background? And can they be part of the solution? And to what extent is there discrimination in the Nordic countries? UNHCR and other experts will discuss this.

UNHCR and DFUNK (Danish Refugee Council Youth) will give the floor to young storytellers with refugee background. Come and meet them and hear their personal stories about fleeing and having to start a new life in Denmark.

What do we do about the “weeds” in the Danish aliens law?
UNHCR and the Danish Refugee Council invite experts, politicians and the audience to debate if the Danish alien laws have become “crazy” from a legal and human rights perspective, as well as what the challenges are when it comes to protection of refugees.

Are third country agreements the best solution to secure refugee protection?
Together with other experts and politicians, UNHCR and the Danish Refugee Council will debate if agreements to establish external centers for processing asylum cases and refugee protection in third countries are the right solution for future refugee protection.

UNHCR will provide a snapshot of the global refugee situation – from refugees forced to flee the war in Ukraine to the protracted crises in Afghanistan and Syria. Why are refugees forced to flee? And which countries host the most refugees?

Lived experiences: Being a refugee in Latvia – from two perspectives
UNHCR will host a conversation between two people forced to flee their homes – one from Ukraine and one from Turkey – both have now found refuge in Latvia. We will hear about their experiences of arriving in Latvia, re-building their lives and the process of developing a sense of belonging in Latvian society.
