Botswana: storm damages camp, but no injuries
A thunderstorm struck the Dukwi refugee camp in eastern Botswana yesterday (Monday), destroying some 40 houses and tents but causing no injuries to the 3,500 refugees - mainly from Angola and Namibia. The 15-minute storm blew roofs off houses, uprooted trees and severed power and phone lines. A UNHCR team is now assessing the damage in the old camp, which is close to the Zimbabwean border and about 650 km north of the Botswana capital of Gaborone. Around 100 of the refugees took shelter in the camp school overnight. The camp cares for 1,200 refugees from Namibia, 1,200 from Angola and the rest from other African countries.
