High Commissioner receives the Seoul Peace Prize
High Commissioner Sadako Ogata was to receive today (Friday) this year's Seoul Peace Prize in the South Korean capital. The Seoul Peace Prize Committee cited Mrs. Ogata for her efforts as a "humanitarian activist who has worked to help ease the suffering of scores of millions of people." She is the fifth recipient of the peace prize, established in 1990 to honour institutions and individuals who have contributed to the development of a more peaceful world. Previous winners were the President of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz and United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
