A toolkit on asylum and migration for the European Elections 2019
In May 2019, UNHCR Malta in collaboration with The European Parliament Office in Malta launched ‘Know the Facts – a toolkit on asylum and migration for the European Elections’. A press briefing for local media and a public discussion was held on 2nd May, at Europa House in Valletta. The event was open to the public and very well attended. The audience was given the opportunity to ask questions and participate in the dialogue on asylum and migration, topics which are among voters’ top concerns ahead of the European Elections 2019.
As mixed migration is always a topic of discussion during election times, it is important for candidates to be equipped with the correct information, statistics, and where to look for the facts.
Know the Facts – a toolkit on asylum and migration for the European elections presents statistics, legislation and general information relating to asylum and migration in Malta, Europe and beyond. It draws on information available from various sources, including UNHCR statistics, Eurostat data and various official sources in Malta.
This booklet is made available to all the official MEP candidates in Malta, as well as national media outlets. It is also shared with relevant authorities and organisations working on asylum and migration-related issues. A digital download of the Know the Facts can be found here.
On the day of the launch, UNHCR Malta also released a press release, calling for responsible rhetoric on asylum and migration in the run up to the European Elections.
