UNHCR – The UN Refugee Agency congratulates the Bicycle Advocacy Group Malta (BAG) for their initiative in donating bicycle lights and high-viz vests to residents of the Marsa Open Centre,Hal Far Tent Village, and other members of the refugee and migrant community.
BAG (Malta) is an advocacy group for commuting cyclists in Malta. The group serves as a platform for cyclists to air their views on cycling improvements, as well as discuss common problems and difficulties. The group also provides training for new cyclists, organises group bike rides, carries out advocacy work, political lobbying, and networking with other organisations.
The initiative came about after the realisation that a number of refugees use bicycles as their main means of transportation in Malta. Bicycle lights increase cyclist visibility and safety. On Tuesday 9th January an event was organised at Marsa Open Centre, with the support of AWAS and UNHCR, to distribute the donated bicycle lights and high-viz vests.
UNHCR also donated a brand new bicycle to a refugee, who was awarded the prize through a raffle organised by BAG. The winner was Christopher Okemi, a 25-year-old Nigerian man who arrived in Malta in 2016 and is currently residing at the Marsa Open Centre.
