26 November 2024, Cahul, Republic of Moldova
UNHCR and the authorities of Cahul District signed a Memorandum of Cooperation today, outlining its commitment to support refugees in the region for 2025 and 2026. The agreement signed by Pavel Groza, President of the Cahul District and Anne-Marie Deutschlander, UNHCR Representative for the Republic of Moldova, focuses on enhancing refugee inclusion, with specific emphasis on education, youth development, and community services.
A key initiative is the continued collaboration on the Community Centre in Cahul, an important platform for refugee support and their inclusion in the society, which has been operational since 2022. Administered by UNHCR’s partner organization Laolalta, the Community Centre is a place open to all, where visitors can benefit from a variety of services including psychosocial and legal counselling, educational and recreational activities, social events, and useful information on job opportunities.
“I am deeply grateful to the authorities of Cahul for their commitment and dedication over the past almost three years. UNHCR values the enthusiasm and proactive approach shown by regional leaders, and we remain committed to working together to develop long-term solutions,” said Anne-Marie Deutschlander, UNHCR Moldova Representative.
“We are proud to continue our partnership with UNHCR to provide vital, tailored support to refugees in Cahul. By addressing the needs of both the local community and refugees, we are achieving meaningful results and are determined to build on this progress,” emphasized Pavel Groza, President of Cahul District.
UNHCR continues to provide vital services in Cahul, including the distribution of non-food items (NFIs), the construction of a multi-functional sports field, and support for local schools through IT equipment and furniture. With over 1,400 refugees currently residing in the district, the partnership with local authorities remains essential in ensuring their successful integration.
