Taisia, aged 71, and Anatolii, aged 74, share a remarkable life journey that transcends the challenges of displacement. Their story began on the dance floors of Odesa, where Anatolii took a chance and approached the beautiful Taisia. Their connection deepened, leading to a happy marriage and two children.
Their life in Odesa turned into turmoil when Russian Federation launched their full-scale invasion in Ukraine. Faced with the escalating situation, Anatolii and Taisia’s children, concerned for their parents’ safety, convinced them to seek refuge in the Republic of Moldova.
In April 2022, packed with a few belongings and accompanied by their two dogs, the couple made the journey to Moldova. They eventually found refuge in the Valea Rediului Refugee Accommodation Center (RAC) in Chisinau, where they have called home for over a year and a half.
“We have everything we need here. We feel calm, at peace. Our room, complete with a balcony and bathroom, provides comfort. The room warmth in the winter, hot water, and the presence of a washing machine makes our lives easier. The staff is exceptional. We may not be at our original home, but we are content,” shares Taisia on their life at the RAC.
Valea Rediului has experienced a positive transformation with UNHCR support in the past year. UNHCR and its partners provide services such as legal aid, psychosocial support, organize recreational activities, and more. It has provided equipment for common areas and most recently renovated a full floor and toilets in the common areas not only to expand its capacity, but to enhance its accessibility. The ongoing refurbishments on the fourth floor, comprising over 20 rooms, are nearing completion and will soon provide a welcoming space for older refugees, those with disabilities, and vulnerable Moldovan families.
Beyond the shelter, the couple secured Temporary Protection and receives cash assistance, primarily used by them for medical needs and dietary essential for their health.
As they face the challenges of displacement, Anatolii and Taisia hold onto a heartfelt wish. “Our biggest dream is to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by our entire family at home. Hopefully, next year will bring the opportunity to fulfill that,” Anatolii shares.
