Elena* still remembers the shelling that forced her to shelter in her Mykolaiv basement for months before she fled to the Republic of Moldova in April of last year. Now she lives with her husband in a small house in Edinet, where they have both found work. They were granted Temporary Protection status shortly after the programme was announced in March of this year. “My biggest dream is peace. I dream of it every night,” she says.
Temporary Protection Status is a measure adopted by the Government of Moldova to protect and assist refugees from Ukraine and their families. It allows them to legally stay in Moldova for a year, until March 2024 at least, with the possibility of an additional one-year extension. In addition to securing legal status, Temporary Protection grants the right to work and access to education – as well as access to primary and emergency healthcare, a key priority for Elena’s family. “My husband has diabetes and a moderate disability, so we need to see family doctors often, which Temporary Protection ensures for us. Plus, Temporary Protection gives us stability,” Elena said.
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has provided substantial support to help the Government implement the Temporary Protection programme. As of 17 July, over 8,474 refugees from Ukraine have registered for the programme.
UNHCR continues to assist refugees and vulnerable communities in the Republic of Moldova thanks to the generous support from the European Union, France, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Denmark, and the United States of America.
