On the 1st of March, His Excellency Graham Paul, Ambassador of France in the Republic of Moldova visited the raion [district] of Ungheni.
The ambassador, accompanied by Francesca Bonelli UNHCR representative, visited the “Solnishco” kindergarten which UNHCR has renovated in cooperation with Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED).
“Solnishco” kindergarten has welcomed 19 refugee children from Ukraine in addition to the Moldovan students. “The children have integrated well,” said Mihai Chirileac, a teacher. “We have no problems”
Both refugee and Moldovan children go to kindergarten setting an example for integration and social cohesion.
“We are so grateful to UNHCR, ACTED, and the Ambassador of France for their support for the refugee situation said Ambros Alexandru, Mayor of Ungheni “The renovation and insulation have made the kindergarten much safer and convenient for children.”
In December 2022, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and partners ACTED concluded the renovation and thermo-insulation of the building. The upgrades help the children stay warm and allow the school to save money on heating and utilities.
The work of UNHCR in the Republic of Moldova is made possible with support from international donors who support the operation specifically, as well as those who contribute broadly earmarked and unearmarked funds that benefit its global programmes.
