BEIRUT, Lebanon 13 December (UNHCR) – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in collaboration with the Government and the People of Japan, announced the provision of emergency aid to assist displaced families in Lebanon.
The escalating hostilities and sustained airstrikes in preceding months forced waves of displacement across Lebanon, with many families fleeing multiple times to seek safety.
Before the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was announced on 26 November, the Government of Lebanon had estimated at the time that more than 1,3 million people in Lebanon had been affected.
“The already challenging humanitarian crisis in Lebanon has been dramatically worsened in recent months. The Government and the People of Japan have once again demonstrated strong solidarity with forcibly displaced people and confidence in UNHCR’s work in the country”, said Ivo Freijsen, UNHCR Representative in Lebanon.
This contribution enables UNHCR and its partners to maintain support, distributing core relief items including warm winter blankets to meet the essential needs of vulnerable affected and displaced families across the country.
“As Japan welcomes the long-awaited ceasefire agreement, it also acknowledges that the disruptive repercussions of the hostilities will persist in the foreseeable future. This initiative in collaboration with UNHCR, aims to address the relief needs of the affected Lebanese communities and alleviate the displacement burden. Japan recognizes the significant efforts required to support the sustainable recovery of Lebanon and will continue to provide its unwavering support to the country and its people during these challenge times,” said Mr. Magoshi Masayuki, Ambassador of Japan to Lebanon.
“Even after the announcement of the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, the dire humanitarian situation continues and the severe winter will soon come. We wish the blankets and other materials we send through UNHCR will contribute to alleviate the suffering of the displaced people in Lebanon,” concluded Mr. Morikawa Toru, Director General, Secretariat of the HQs for the International Peace Cooperation, Cabinet Office of the Government of Japan.
UNHCR is grateful for this vital contribution, which strengthens our ability to respond swiftly to the ongoing crisis and address the urgent needs of forcibly displaced and affected families.
