BEIRUT, Lebanon 20 November – UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, warmly welcomes a generous contribution of US$ 500,000 from the Republic of Korea. This timely support will strengthen UNHCR’s humanitarian response, addressing the most urgent needs of refugees and host communities in Lebanon.
Lebanon is grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis. The Government estimates that over 1.3 million people have been affected and displaced by the escalating hostilities and sustained airstrikes, particularly in South Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley, and the densely populated southern suburbs of Beirut. With the onset of cooler temperatures and rain, the needs of the displaced families continue to grow.
“Since the onset of the Syria crisis, the Republic of Korea has been a steadfast supporter of UNHCR’s efforts in Lebanon and beyond. Now, amidst an additional crisis in the country, this contribution is crucial in enabling us to deliver life-saving assistance, including core relief items ensuring that families have essential supplies, better living conditions in emergency shelters,” said Ivo Freijsen, UNHCR Representative in Lebanon.
H.E. Mr. IL Park, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Lebanon, said “Korea is deeply committed to supporting the most vulnerable populations affected by the ongoing crisis and conflict in Lebanon. Through this contribution, we hope to alleviate some of the hardships experienced by those displaced, and to support efforts to provide essential humanitarian assistance. Korea remains a steadfast partner of UNHCR in its mission to protect and assist those in need”.
