UNHCR Lebanon strongly refutes accusations made by former MP Antoine Zahra during a recent appearance on LBCI’s Vision 2030 programme, in which he claimed that UNHCR is “threatening Lebanese security officers to prevent them from dealing with Syrian refugees in Lebanon”.
Such accusations are not only wrong and unfounded, but they also undermine the humanitarian, non-political and social character that are at the heart of UNHCR’s mandate and work in Lebanon, and other countries around the world. It is crucial for UNHCR to clarify that the claims made by Mr. Zahra about UNHCR interfering with Lebanese security forces are unfounded and misrepresent our principles and mandate.
UNHCR’s mission in Lebanon, as in every country where we operate, is to protect and support refugees, internally displaced, and stateless persons, all by working closely with the host government to ensure that international laws and standards are respected. Our work is carried out in strict accordance with international human rights and refugee law.
We work to support governments who are hosting refugees and facing internal displacement, providing them with guidance and resources, and in no shape or form resort to intimidation as claimed by Mr. Zahra.
We take these allegations seriously and are concerned about the potential impact of such statements on public opinion and the safety of the people we serve and UNHCR staff members in Lebanon. Spreading disinformation can foster unnecessary tension and hostility which Lebanon does not need at this time.
UNHCR remains committed to its close partnership with the government of Lebanon and continues to advocate for support for the most vulnerable Lebanese and refugee communities, and to foster open dialogue with stakeholders for long-term solutions as well as more support for Lebanon at this critical juncture.
