UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and Agility Public Warehousing Company in Kuwait signed an agreement to support refugee students’ education in Egypt.
This agreement will support the education of 1,788 refugee school-age children in Egypt in 2023 by covering tuition fees for public and community schools, transportation costs, and school supplies. Noting that Agility’s first partnered with UNHCR in 2016.
“Education is a fundamental human right, enshrined in the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child and the 1951 Refugee Convention. UNHCR advocates for access to education for refugees of all ages through their inclusion in formal education systems, and we aim to ensure access to school, or school readiness programmes, during the first three months of displacement. However, due to the persistence and protracted refugee crises, as well as the lack of funding, many refugee families face difficulties in accessing education due to life priorities and difficult living conditions. Agility’s kind contribution will support UNHCR’s efforts to make education more accessible to more refugee students and help them build a better future.” – stated UNHCR’s Representative, Nisreen Rubaian.
It is estimated that more than 103 million people have been forced from their homes across the world due to war, conflict, persecution, and human rights violations, a record number that represents more than 1% of the global population.
“The world’s refugee population is growing at an alarming rate as people flee conflict and violence, economic deprivation, and the devastation of natural disasters and climate change,” said Tarek Sultan, Agility Vice Chairman and CEO. “Host countries find themselves overwhelmed and unable to meet the needs of those who cross their borders seeking protection. We have to find cost-effective ways of supporting people and providing them with the means to learn, work and thrive, or we risk losing a generation of young people who have much to contribute.”
Egypt hosts more than 288,000 refugees and asylum seekers, 32% of whom are children and youth of school age. UNHCR Egypt supports refugees and asylum seeker families with school-age children with education grants that support their enrollment in Egyptian public schools under the supervision of the Ministry of Education.
In addition, UNHCR supports the education of refugees and asylum seekers in urban settings at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels.
