UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and Box Hill College Kuwait signed today a Letter of Intent (LOI) aiming to enhance collaboration between the two parties, through developing skills and providing practical opportunities for the college’s students.
With this agreement, students from Box Hill College Kuwait will get training opportunities at UNHCR’s Office in Kuwait, where they can gain practical experience in the humanitarian field and learn about UNHCR’s work firsthand. This experience will enhance their understanding of human rights and the plight of refugees, as well as UNHCR’s activities within the framework of global conventions and relevant laws, both locally and internationally.
Commenting on this cooperation, Nisreen Rubaian, UNHCR Representative in Kuwait, said: “This collaboration with Box Hill College Kuwait, which is the first-of-its-kind collaboration with a private university in Kuwait, reflects UNHCR’s commitment to raising awareness about the plight of refugees and the importance of education in building stronger, more inclusive societies, while introducing the humanitarian field work as a potential career path for the trainees in the future. Practical training opportunities helps the students acquire the needed knowledge and experience to become advocates for humanity and equality values in their future professional lives after graduation.”
On his part, Dr. Ali Arifa, President of Box Hill College Kuwait, expressed his delight with this collaboration, saying: “We are proud to sign this LOI with UNHCR, which provides our students with a unique opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom in a real-world setting. This cooperation reinforces our commitment to providing a comprehensive and distinctive educational experience for our students, and reflects the college’s social mission in advocating or today’s pressing issues, such as that of refugees and displaced people.”
The LOI also includes the commitment of both parties to exchange information, provide support to student clubs and groups, and coordinate media and awareness activities related to humanitarian issues in general, and the forced displacement crisis in particular.
