UNHCR Kenya took part in a training under the Kenya/Somali Forced Migrants Rights Initiative Project. The forums organised by the Ministry of Interior and National Coordination of Government were held in Isiolo, Meru and Nyeri from 20th – 25th July 2015.
The training was aimed at: ensuring enhanced reception and registration of forced migrants; involving all actors in forced migrants’ protection in Kenya; creating awareness among actors on the rights and obligations of forced migrants in Kenya; and strengthening the legislation and policy framework on forced migrants.
The senior government officials were made aware of the rights and obligations of refugees in Kenya. Contacts were also established with government officials in the three counties.
The facilitators were UNHCR, Kituo Cha Sheria, Refugee Consortium of Kenya and the Ministry of Interior and National Coordination of Government. UNHCR facilitated sessions on Refugee Status Determination (RSD), Durable Solutions and the International Legal Framework for Refugee Management. This project is funded by the EU through IRC.
The training targeted senior administrative and law enforcement officials in the three counties. In attendance were all the 3 county commissioners, County Police and AP Commandants, OCPDs and NIS officers.
