Nairobi – On Sunday 28 April, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, donated core relief items to support people affected and displaced from their homes following heavy rains and flooding.
The country has witnessed persistent rainfall during the months of March and April, resulting in widespread flooding and displacement of families. More than 75 people have lost their lives, whilst others have been injured or reported missing.
UNHCR coordinated with the Government of Kenya to understand the immediate needs and mobilized core relief items from the regional stockpile. A total of 5,000 blankets, 2,000 sleeping mats, 2,000 jerry cans and 1,500 mosquito nets were shared to support the most affected families.
The UNHCR Kenya Representative, Caroline van Buren, joined the Deputy President H.E. Rigathi as well as the United Nations Resident Coordinator at the Valley Bridge Primary School, in Mathare, Nairobi County.
“UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has stepped up to support the Government of Kenya. Unprecedented rainfall and flooding is causing devastation and displacement and we are proud to be able to support the most affected families with these essential items.” Caroline van Buren, speaking at the event.
