Nairobi – On Saturday 3 February, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, mobilized to contribute immediate assistance to people affected by the explosion and fire in Embakasi, Nairobi.
The Embakasi fire broke out on Thursday 1 February, following a gas explosion at the Jua Kali area near City Stadium in Nairobi County. At least six people lost their lives and more than 300 others sustained injuries.
UNHCR immediately contacted Government authorities to understand the needs and mobilized non-food items from the regional stockpile. The contribution included 1,000 tarpaulins, 1,000 blankets, 1,000 sleeping mats and 600 kitchen-sets to support families displaced from their homes.
“As the UN Refugee Agency, it was our duty to support the response and assist those most affected by the disaster. We were proud to distribute these essential items and we are ready to support the Government and other United Nations partners further as the situation and needs evolve.” UNHCR Country Representative Caroline van Buren, speaking from Embakasi on 3 February.
