Geneva/Amman | 78 % of the population in Jordan believe refugees should always be able to find safe refuge in any country if they have to escape from war or persecution. Only 12 % are not in agreement with this which puts the understanding for the plight of refugees in Jordan above the global average (73 %). Jordan is also among the top-10 countries where the majority of the population (57%) is convinced refugees make a positive contribution to the country.
These are some of the key findings of a new, independent survey undertaken by Ipsos – a leading market research company – with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, just ahead of World Refugee Day on 20 June. They reflect the views of over 33,000 adults in 52 countries in Africa, Europe, Latin America and Middle East/North Africa.
Women and men in Jordan also expressed strong support for the inclusion of refugees into the national systems of health and education as practiced already by the government. 52% want refugees to keep access to the health system with only six per cent holding an opposing view, while 60 % of survey respondents in Jordan support continued refugee inclusion into the education system, both points above the global country average in the survey published by UNHCR on Tuesday.
Globally, support for the right to seek safety remains strong. Commenting on the Ipsos study, UNHCR’s Representative in Jordan, Dominik Bartsch, confirmed that the findings resonate in Jordan, including on the need for sustained international assistance for developing countries hosting refugees: 37 % of respondents and 56 % of people in Jordan believe more international support is needed. “We are calling for more solidarity from the international community with Jordan and with the refugees it generously hosts”, said Bartsch.
