In photos: Emi Mahmoud meets refugees on the Greek island of Lesvos

In June 2016 UNHCR High Profile Supporter and slam poet Emi Mahmoud travelled to the Greek island of Lesvos to witness UNHCR's frontline work and meet refugees.

Emi looks out over the sea towards Turkey. Over one million refugees crossed the Mediterranean Sea in the year preceding Emi's visit.

Emi meets refugees at Kara Tepe camp

Emi speaks with Syrian refugee Amina, whose husband drowned when their dinghy capsized en route to Greece from Turkey. Emi spoke of her own grief and sorrow at the loss of relatives in Darfur.

Emi speaks with Efi Latsoudi, joint-winner of the 2016 Nansen Refugee Award. They discuss Pikpa camp - which Efi set up in the buildings of a former holiday camp to support some of the most vulnerable women and children arrivals. At its peak over 12,000 people arrived in just one day.
