World Refugee Day 2003: Republic of Moldova
For the fifth year, UNHCR organised the "Rock for Refugees" concert at the open-air theatre, Teatrul Verde. The event was co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) under the auspices of the Mayor of Chisinau.
The show featured three Moldovan bands (Gindul Mitei, In Quadro, and Nelly Ciobanu) as well as two groups from Romania (Pasarea Colibri and Pops). During the concert, a lottery was held and prizes were offered by Carpatair, UNHCR, UNDP, OSCE, WHO and Coca Cola. All the proceeds were sent to the Charity Centre for Refugees (CCR), UNHCR's partner organisation, which will purchase sports equipment for refugees and asylum seekers.
UNHCR and CCR organised a friendly sports competition for Moldovan children and refugee children from the Russian-Ukrainian school, No. 18 "Nechui Levitskogo".
On June 18, UNHCR organised the official opening of an exhibition of paintings by Oxana Tip and UNHCR poster exhibition, which will remain at UNHCR Office in Chisinau until the end of August 2003.
An exhibition of posters and UNHCR's youth photo series was held at the Press House in Chisinau from June 11-30. The same exhibition was held at Onisifor Ghibu Library throughout the month of July.
Ceramic items and other handicrafts made by refugees and asylum seekers were displayed and sold at the Charity Centre for Refugees, which offers ceramic art courses. A multicultural show was performed by young refugees from Chechnya, Sudan and some other countries, as well as local residents including children from Kindergarten 119.
