Deputy High Commissioner wraps up visit in Nairobi
Deputy High Commissioner Wendy Chamberlin is wrapping up her week-long mission to southern Sudan, Uganda and Kenya this weekend. She has been seeing first-hand the enormous rehabilitation needs in southern Sudan as well as meeting displaced people and Sudanese refugees in Uganda and Kenya. There are some 500,000 refugees from southern Sudan in neighbouring countries, and another 4 million displaced within Sudan due to two decades of conflict, which officially ended on January 9 with the signing of a comprehensive peace accord. The Deputy High Commissioner travelled to the region to look at UNHCR's efforts to begin laying the groundwork for an eventual return of refugees and to highlight this drastically underfunded programme.
