UNHCR has been following the rising tensions within the Eritrean community with great concern. UNHCR is calling upon all Eritrean community members, from all political groups, to avoid violence and maintain public order. UNHCR notes that all refugees and asylum seekers are obliged to respect the law of the host country.
The violence within the Eritrean community affects in many ways, not only those directly involved, but all refugees and asylum-seekers in Israel. Any violent incident can harm the majority of the asylum-seeker community which are hard-working and peaceful residents of Israel.
In light of this, UNHCR urges all members of the Eritrean community to exercise restraint, avoid violence and manage disagreements in a peaceful manner. If acts of violence occur, they should be reported to the Israeli Police which holds responsibility to act upon the persons involved.
