UNHCR is shocked to learn of the violence which occurred at a demonstration today in south Tel Aviv and to hear reports of over 170 injured asylum seekers and dozens of injured police officers. UNHCR expresses its concern of the high number of injuries and the acts of violence and extends sympathy to all injured persons.
Based on available information, it appears that a number of Eritreans have engaged in violent behaviour in response to a peaceful and approved event. UNHCR condemns acts of violence, including acts of violence committed by asylum seekers.
While peaceful assembly is a basic human right, UNHCR stresses that all refugees and asylum seekers are obliged to respect the law of their host country and are subject to the same procedures as any other resident or citizen in the case of violence or other criminal conduct.
The vast majority of asylum seekers living in Israel are peaceful and law-abiding residents. UNHCR is convinced that the violent conduct today is not representative of the broader asylum seeker community and is calling those involved to step back from the violence.
