UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi to Visit Ireland 10-11 July
UNHCR is pleased to note that the High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi will make an official visit to Ireland on 10-11 July.
On 10 July he will meet with the Irish President at Áras an Uachtaráin and a group of refugees from different countries who have made Ireland home.
On 11 July he will meet with the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and the Minister for Justice and speak at two public events at the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission and the Institute of International & European Affairs.
Registration for both these events is now open.
High Commissioner Grandi will argue that Ireland’s commitment to overseas development assistance and multilateral efforts to protect refugees and people on the move serve as an example to other countries in the world. He will also acknowledge Ireland’s long-standing resettlement programme and welcome the recent introduction of a pilot Community Sponsorship Programme; additional resettlement places from more countries around the world will be needed in the years ahead if we are to treat refugees as a global concern and a shared responsibility.
He will welcome Ireland’s commitment, reiterated in the recent Policy for International Development - A Better World, to follow through on the Global Compact on Refugees and discuss with the government what plans they have to contribute to the first ever Global Refugee Forum, which will take place on 17 and 18 December 2019.
