UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is deeply saddened to hear that a five-year-old Syrian boy has died on the Greek island of Lesvos today, after he was hit by a car outside of the Kara Tepe reception centre, which hosts 1,200 refugees and asylum-seekers. The child passed away in Mytilene hospital from injuries despite the efforts of medical staff.
We are supporting the child’s surviving family and stand ready to continue assisting authorities in any way possible.
