UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, donated today equipment for the maternity clinic of Mytilene’s General Hospital on Lesvos. An ultrasound machine and a specialized printer were formally handed over to the Hospital’s Director, Anna Zervou, in appreciation of the tireless life-saving assistance to refugee women in pregnancy complications and childbirth. Ms. Zervou thanked UNHCR on behalf of the Hospital’s Board of Directors, stating that “the Board would like to express its gratitude to UNHCR, for the initiative to proceed with this donation and to enhance Mytilene Hospital’s efforts to support vulnerable population groups”.
The new equipment will improve care to expecting mothers in Mytilene, including asylum-seeking women, and provide support to the refugee and local communities in Lesvos.
“The staff of the maternity ward have performed essential medical examinations and saved the lives of refugee mothers and their new-born babies. We hope this gesture of support will help them continue their vital work” said Astrid Castelein, Head of UNHCR Lesvos, during the handover ceremony at Mytilene’s “Vostaneio” General Hospital.
In addition to the maternity clinic equipment, UNHCR also donated a photocopy machine to the Hospital Administration. The donation was funded by the Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs (DG HOME) of the European Commission.
