Imagination merges with solidarity in the children’s drawing contest of “Shedia” street paper. We invite our young friends to use their creativity to paint the concept of “home” with their brushes or coloured pencils
“I was very happy with our student’s award. She has made great progress, she is consistent and has a great love for visual arts. But I was also happy for all the children who participated in the contest,” said Giorgos Korbakis, a teacher at the 6th Primary School of Rethymno, Crete, where Marilena Malamata, the winner of last year’s contest, studied at the 4th grade.
In the end of September last year, “Shedia” street paper called on children aged 5-12 years old to paint the word “home” and depict with the colours of their imagination what this heart-warming concept means to them. The children’s drawing that won the hearts of the jury decorated the cover of the January 2022 issue. The winners, however, were all those hundreds of children that participated in the contest, proving that giving and creating can bring joy. 1,600 entries were received last year. So, now, this successful contest is back! For a second year, our young friends, aged 5-12 years old, are invited to use their creativity to paint the concept of “home” with their paintbrushes and coloured pencils. And what is more, this year’s contest will be held in collaboration with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, highlighting the importance and meaning of home for people who have been forced to leave their homelands in search of safety and protection.
The prize for the winning drawing will be its publication on the cover of the January 2023 issue of “Shedia”, while the twenty finalists will see their works exhibited at “Shedia Home” premises (located at 56, Kolokotroni street, in Athens). The works that will qualify for the second phase of the contest will receive a symbolic gift. The contest starts on 28 September and the submission of the drawings is open until Friday 4 November.
The jury of the contest comprises of Elina Anthi, a student of the second grade at the Moraitis School; Foteini Darra, singer; Gerasimos Daskalakis, a vendor of “Shedia”; Popi Dionysopoulou, member of the Communications and Public Information Unit of UNHCR office in Greece; Daphne Zoumboulakis, director of the Zoumboulakis Galleries; Michalis Kountouris, cartoonist; and George Bilalis, publisher of the “En plo” publication house.
