The CEO of AXA, Errikos Moatsos, and the Representative of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Greece, Philippe Leclerc, met at UNHCR’s premises in Athens earlier this week. The main topic of the meeting was AXA’s financial support for the immediate relief of refugees in Greece.
With the support of AXA, UNHCR will reinforce its work. AXA’s contribution will assist in the provision of water, food items, sleeping bags, hygiene kits, health services and legal representation, with priority to children -including unaccompanied- women and people with specific needs.
In the framework of the meeting, areas of further cooperation between the two agencies were discussed, for the establishment of a stable partnership in various levels and with long-term results, in the framework of UNHCR’s and AXA’s respective strategies.
Following the meeting Mr. Leclerc said: “AXA’s humanitarian contribution is of great importance since there is an acute need for stable and timely financial support, to flexibly deal with the multiple challenges faced by those who have fled their homes due to war and persecution. AXA’s significant aid helps to strengthen the safety net for these people in Greece.”
From his side, Mr. Moatsos said: “UNHCR plays a critical role in the coordination of numerous organizations who provide assistance to the thousands of persons who have arrived in Greece. UNHCR creates a bridge of solidarity giving AXA the opportunity to support this effort which has great value for the refugee cause.”
It is worth noting that the AXA Group has undertaken a global initiative to support the refugees. Greece was among the countries that it selected to provide financial support, with the funds being directed to UNHCR.
