UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is deeply saddened by the death of a 27-year-old Afghan woman late last night at the Kara Tepe accommodation site on the Greek island of Lesvos. The mother of three was killed in a fire which started at the container where she lived with her husband and children, and also spread to another nearby container.
The woman’s husband and their three children survived the fire without serious injuries and are receiving support from UNHCR and partners.
The fire started shortly before 2 am and fire services promptly arrived on scene. An investigation into the cause of the incident and the death is ongoing. The Mayor of Mytilene Municipality, the Kara Tepe manager, and the UNHCR head of office on Lesvos also arrived at the site after being alerted by police.
Kara Tepe, where 1,300 vulnerable asylum-seekers are hosted, is an accommodation facility operated by the Municipality of Mytilene with UNHCR and funds from the European Commission.
