UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, warmly congratulates Stamatia Stavrinaki for her election to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination during the 28th Meeting of States parties on 21 June.
The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is a UN treaty body, composed of 18 independent experts, which monitors the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination by State parties. The newly elected members are expected to assume their four-year terms in January 2020.
Stamatia Stavrinaki is a human rights lawyer and the assistant coordinator of Greece’s Racist Violence Recording Network, RVRN, which she helped set up in 2011. RVRN is an umbrella network of 47 civil society organizations coordinated by UNHCR and the Greek National Commission for Human Rights. In 2018, the network recorded 117 incidents of racial violence in Greece and a broader acceptance of bias-motivated attacks by society.
UNHCR wishes Stamatia Stavrinaki and the members of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination success in discharging their duties.
