UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in Greece in cooperation with the interagency Youth Awareness Committee1, is pleased to announce the results of “A home away from home”, the 22nd National Student Contest on refugees, organized for the school year 2018-2019.
More than two thousand students, including refugees, participated in this year’s contest with the valuable support of their teachers. Children in 140 primary and secondary schools, evening schools, schools for children with disabilities and reception classes for refugee children, worked together or individually on texts, posters, comics, sketches and logos.
The 22nd National Student Contest gave the opportunity to students across Greece to share ideas and experiences about what home means for each one of us and to also think about those people – men, women and children – who have been forced to leave their home behind fleeing conflicts and persecution.
Among the participations, awards were given to 100 students from various parts of Greece: Athens, Ano Toumpa, Thessaloniki, Karditsa, Kozani, Lamia, Livadia, Marousi, Metamorphosi, Peristeri, Samos, Skala of Oropos, Serres and Chalkidiki.
Members of the Youth Awareness Committee evaluated the entries based on their expertise. All participants will receive commemorative diplomas, while awarded entries will receive personal or school technological equipment (projectors).
The committee would like to thank all the students and schools for their works, notable for their talent and originality, as well as for their efforts to build a home for all. A home grounded on safety, love and respect, like the one described by Mohammed from Iraq (1st Vocational High School of Livadia) in his awarded poem written in Greek:
