World Humanitarian Day 2024:
Seven UNHCR colleagues share their stories
Every year on 19 August, World Humanitarian Day, we come together to honour humanitarians around the world who strive to meet ever-growing needs, risking their lives in the line of duty.
As crises escalate, so do the dangers for those providing aid. 2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers. 2024 could be even worse. Despite universally accepted international laws to regulate the conduct of armed conflict and limit its impact, violations of these laws continue unabated, unchallenged and unchecked.
Yet, in the face of security and access challenges, humanitarians around the globe continue to honour their commitment to deliver for the people they serve, whoever they may be, wherever they may come from, whenever they may be forced to flee.
This World Humanitarian Day, we spotlight the inspiring stories of seven UNHCR colleagues working in the field across Greece. From Evros to Kos, from Samos to Thessaloniki, and from Lesvos and Chios to Athens, they offer life-saving support, safeguard human rights and help refugees and asylum-seekers build a better future.
We asked our colleagues what led them to the humanitarian sector and what motivates them as they work with refugee communities to make our world a better place. What moments can they never forget and what challenges have they encountered?
We invite you to read their stories and join us this World Humanitarian Day in calling for the safety, dignity and well-being of all people affected by crises and those who help them.
