UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is alarmed at reports that a 16-year-old Syrian boy was hospitalized with leg and head injuries on the Greek island of Lesvos yesterday, after being shot by a local farmer near the Moria Reception and Identification Centre.
“UNHCR unequivocally condemns acts of violence against boys, girls, women, and men who have arrived in Greece to seek asylum,” said senior UNHCR official Giovanni Lepri. “While we call for respect of the rights of asylum seekers and refugees, we also call on everyone to respect the laws of the country. All efforts should be made to defuse tensions between communities and contribute to peaceful coexistence.”
The Refugee Agency also reiterated the importance of easing overcrowding in places like Moria, accelerating transfers to the mainland, and improving conditions at the reception centre, which would substantially contribute to alleviating the situation.
