More than 1,000 primary and secondary students, including refugee children, in 46 schools around Greece will showcase their drama and arts skills in a series of festivals this month to mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
The collaborative exercise, dubbed “Together,” will feature theatre performances, arts exhibitions and community activities in the cities of Aigio, Athens, Kalamata, Nafplio, Patras, Thessaloniki and Trikala from this Saturday until March 28.
They are supported by teachers, school and local authorities and local partners in the framework of the “It could be me – It could be you” project that is implemented by the Hellenic Theatre/Drama & Education Network (TENet – Gr) and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.
The festivals, bringing together the creative forces of the school and local communities, will continue in the following months in more locations around the country. They are the result of arts and theatre based workshops that give the opportunity to students to share their thoughts, ideas and dreams and express their solidarity with children who have been uprooted by war, violence and poverty.
“It could be me – it could be you” is an awareness-raising project about refugees and human rights
using theatre and drama. It was launched in 2015 by TENet – Gr and UNHCR in Greece and is accredited by the Hellenic Ministry of Education and the International Drama/Theatre & Education Association.
Under the project, more than 6,000 teachers, 11,000 students and 100 partners have been involved in capacity building seminars, interactive workshops in schools, festivals, events and joint activities bringing refugee and host communities closer. This is the second year that schools have marked International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination through the “It could me – it could be you.”
