Chios: World Refugee Day 2022

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency on Chios marked World Refugee Day 2022 with refugees, local actors, groups and humanitarian organizations operating on the island through events dedicated to the universal right of every person to seek safety, whoever they are, wherever they come from and whenever they were forced to flee.

During the event held in the afternoon of 20 June 2022, Chios Municipal Garden was filled with the music and voices of refugee children, their journey experiences and dreams, while poems about the human right to safety were read by members of the poetry group “Seistro” and refugees. Film screenings included short films on the courage and resilience of the world’s uprooted population and the animated drama “The Swallows of Kabul”.

Earlier in the day, a football tournament at the island’s reception center gave to the participating teams the opportunity to score for the victory, while they all received the winning #dreamballs of UNHCR’s Youth with Refugees Art Contest, created by young people around the world.

With special thanks to Chios Municipality and Chios Municipal Community Council, Chios RIC Administration, Chios Refugee Education Coordinators Ms Evangelia Theodorou and Mr Dimitris Ntomatas, Poetry Group “Seistro”, Chios Music Festival teacher Ms Andrianna Neamoniti, film director Mr Sotiris Palaskas, Chios Cinema Club, METAdrasi, Movement on the Ground and refugees for their contribution and support in this year’s World Refugee Day events on Chios.
